The story behind TRATTO

About us

Built from an enthusiast’s search for a clearer picture. Founded by Darin Principe, a car enthusiast and collector.

Where it began

TRATTO grew out of Darin Principe’s own experience as a car enthusiast and collector. Researching a potential purchase could mean spending hours moving between listings, auction results, owner discussions, technical articles and specialist websites. Every source might contribute something useful, but assembling a clear picture took considerable time.

That research became even more involved when considering buying and importing cars from Europe, Japan and Australia. The car’s specification, history, maintenance and location all mattered, yet the information needed to understand them was often scattered. Darin wanted somewhere that could bring those pieces together and make the research easier to follow.

Having lived in Germany and Italy for many years, Darin also brings firsthand experience of buying cars there, as well as in the Netherlands. Those different buying experiences helped shape his view of what a prospective buyer should have available: clear information about the individual car, useful context and enough detail to ask informed questions. That perspective is part of the thinking behind TRATTO and the way we want to present information to buyers.

The idea for TRATTO came from that search: a place where enthusiasm for a car could develop into a well-informed decision, supported by useful reading, clear records and access to people who understand the model.

What one 993 purchase brought into focus

A recent purchase of a Porsche 993 from a Porsche dealer in California brought that need into focus. There was initially limited information available about the car’s earlier history. Darin’s deeper research led him to Japanese auction records showing that the same car had been listed several times over the years.

Those records included detailed inspections, photographs, paint and interior condition ratings, and information about any reported accident history. Comparing them helped him build a fuller picture of the car over time, beyond what had been available in the original listing.

The research also brought the car’s specification into focus: Arctic Silver paint, M030 sport suspension, hardback sport seats and a factory roof without a sunroof, often called a “slicktop”. For Darin, that combination made it feel like a near-unicorn find. The appeal was in the combination of details he had uncovered, rather than an unusual paint colour alone.

That additional context made for a more informed and confident purchase. It is the kind of research experience TRATTO aims to make easier: bringing useful evidence together so that buyers can understand an individual car and decide what further questions to ask.

What we are building

Our initial focus is modern-classic Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini models. We are starting with editorial guides and model introductions, then developing the marketplace and data connections around them. The goal is to help a buyer move naturally from discovering a model to understanding its variations, researching an individual example and arranging the right specialist inspection.

We want the detail to be useful. A transmission conversion deserves an explanation of its origin and workmanship. A service history should make it clear what was done and when. A claimed special edition needs evidence that belongs to the particular chassis. Those distinctions help buyers ask better questions and help conscientious sellers explain what makes their cars worth considering.

Confidence through clarity

Confidence should come from understanding the evidence. We intend to identify the source and date of vehicle information, distinguish a seller’s statement from a documented finding, and keep gaps visible. A useful research tool should make it easier to recognise what is known and what still needs checking.

Independent inspections are part of that approach. Our planned network of mechanics and restoration specialists is about relationships, knowledge and access. We do not intend to charge workshop partners referral fees. Buyers will choose and engage their own specialists, with the scope of any work agreed directly.

An enthusiast’s point of view

Darin’s own collection and ongoing interest in buying, researching and enjoying cars shape the questions we ask. We are interested in the details that distinguish one example from another, and in the people who preserve, maintain and drive them. We also want to make that knowledge approachable for someone considering their first modern classic.

Our editorial car features will be selected independently. We want to explain why a car deserves attention and what a prospective buyer should investigate, without treating exposure as an endorsement of its condition. Relationships with dealers can be valuable while leaving room for an independent view.

The first chapter

The website is live while the wider platform is being developed. The articles and model pages are the beginning; dealer inventory, licensed data feeds and a fuller specialist network will follow as the appropriate relationships are established. We are not currently offering inspection bookings or presenting the reference cars as available inventory.

For now, start with the model guides or the journal. The purpose of TRATTO is to make the time spent researching a car more useful—and to help you approach the eventual purchase with better questions and a clearer understanding.
